What Does BNI Do? My BNI Review

By Scotti Ian Ogden

What if you could have a 33-member marketing team working tirelessly to promote your business—all without hiring a single employee? Sounds too good to be true, right? But for me, it’s a reality, thanks to BNI.

BNI, or Business Network International, is the world’s largest business networking organization, and it’s revolutionized the way I approach referrals and business growth. Through BNI, I’ve cultivated meaningful relationships, built trust with other professionals, and turned networking into a powerful tool for success. In this blog post, I’ll share what BNI is, how it works, and why it has been a game-changer for my business.

What Does BNI Do?

BNI stands for Business Network International, and it operates in over 70 countries with more than 11,000 chapters and 328,000 members worldwide. The organization’s primary purpose is simple yet powerful: to bring business owners together to exchange referrals and build strong, lasting relationships. Its philosophy, “Giver’s Gain,” emphasizes giving to others as the foundation for receiving in return.

How Does BNI Work?

At its core, BNI is about structured networking. Here are some of the key elements that make it so effective:

A Built-In Marketing Team

In my local chapter, BNI Oceanside in White Rock, there are 33 members. These aren’t just business owners—they’re my marketing team. Each time they meet potential clients, friends, or

other business owners, they think of me if the opportunity fits. Likewise, I do the same for them. It’s a mutually beneficial cycle where everyone wins.

Accountability and Quality

In BNI, accountability is everything. If someone refers me and I deliver subpar work, it reflects poorly on the person who recommended me. That’s why BNI members hold themselves to the highest standards of professionalism, customer service, and quality. It ensures trust and reliability within the group.

The Power of One

BNI encourages members to connect with at least one other member each week to learn more about their business and goals. This one-on-one approach helps foster trust and deeper understanding, making it easier to refer business to one another.

Education and Growth

BNI doesn’t just connect you with referrals; it also provides tools to help you grow as a business owner. From continuing education moments to resources on sales and marketing, BNI ensures its members are always learning.

Trackable Results

Everything in BNI is measurable. When referrals result in closed deals, members log the transaction to track how much business is being generated. For example, BNI globally facilitated $24.2 billion in sales last year through its members. In my own business, 15% of my revenue came from BNI referrals last year, and I’m working to grow that to 25-30%.

My BNI Review

Before joining BNI, I had always been the type of person to give referrals naturally. But BNI gave me a structured system to amplify this habit while tracking results. It transformed a casual practice into a strategic advantage. I’ve built incredible relationships with like-minded business owners and learned that giving first creates opportunities for everyone involved. Joining BNI didn’t just help me grow my business—it changed the way I approach networking and relationships. And the best part? I now have a 33-member marketing team helping me succeed. Isn’t that something every business owner dreams of?

What is the Downside of BNI?

BNI isn’t for everyone. It requires commitment, accountability, and a genuine interest in helping others succeed. But for those willing to invest in the process, it’s a game-changer. My advice? If you’re serious about growing your business, building trust, and cultivating meaningful relationships, BNI is worth exploring.
